According to studies done by the ADA, a diet high in sodium has been linked to the development of hypertension and stroke.
Other factors that affect water weight include the amount of salt intake and frequency of eating. The American Dental Association recommends limiting salt intake to one teaspoon per day and eating food such as fruits and vegetables prior to eating meat, especially red meats, to reduce the risk of bloat. According to the ADA, people with elevated blood pressure, kidney problems, diabetes or hyperactive gall bladder should avoid salty foods and sodium-containing products. People with a history of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome should avoid foods that are high in sodium and those that contain sodium.
